A good place to start when making your own natural perfume is to research your favourite fragrances. In most cases, you will see a theme when it comes to the top/head, middle/heart and base notes.  Since top/head notes are the first scents you smell and the first to dissipate (within 10-15 minutes), they are usually strong, potent or citrus smells like lemon, lime, orange or mint. The middle/heart notes determine if a fragrance is fresh, floral, oriental, etc. These are the most obvious notes lingering for 15-45 minutes and can include scents like cinnamon, jasmine, lemongrass, vanilla and rose. Base notes provide the foundation and create longevity by using woodsy scents like cedarwood, ginger and pine.

The method you use to turn your ingredients into concentrated oils will differ depending on what you have chosen so do your research.  Once you have your oils, you need to dilute them with a carrier oil. Common choices are jojoba, sweet almond and grape seed oil.

Then you can add your scents together from base to middle/heart and then top/head. A good ratio to follow is 20% top notes, 50% mid notes and 20% base notes.

The best place to spray perfume is on the pulse points as these are the warmest spots on our body. The heat helps to release the fragrance into the air and ensure longevity. The pulse points you should be applying your perfume to are the base of the throat, the wrists, behind the ear and in the warmer months; the inner elbows and behind the knees. You can also apply perfume to the top of the ears if they are oily as the oil will trap the fragrance and help it linger.

Unlike what we see in the movies, spritzing our perfume and walking through it doesn’t actually accomplish much, so pulse points are key. Hold around 10-15cm away, spray 2-4 times and allow the perfume to dry. Refrain from rubbing your wrists together as this actually breaks down fragrance molecules.

Some perfumes can remain on the skin for over 24 hours, however the majority usually last between 3-12 hours. This is largely determined by notes but can also be impacted by the weather or the dryness of your skin.

The average shelf life for perfumes is five years. Perfumes with heavier base notes such as patchouli and amber tend to last longer than those with floral or fruity base notes. Proper storage can lengthen a perfume’s life-span so be sure to keep your perfume away from direct sunlight, moisture, humidity and areas with changing temperatures. Refrain from shaking the bottle and always secure the cap promptly after using to avoid air exposure.

Wearing out-of-date perfume can cause irritation so stay vigilant of any odour or visual changes in your perfume that may indicate expiration. These include a weaker fragrance, strong vinegar-like odour or a darker liquid.
