Brave the winter with these beauty tips

The air’s getting cooler, the breeze is getting chillier and the weather’s a whole lot wetter.

Our summer tans are fading and our complexion’s are drying. So it’s time to give our daily routine the old switch-a-roo and start preparing for winter to take the reins.

Take back control this winter by employing these beauty tips to ensure that your skin is in prime condition for some stunning makeup application.

#1 Make moisturising your priority

If there’s anything your skin is lacking in winter, it’s moisture.

Keeping on top of your skin’s moisture levels will be key to making sure that your makeup looks fresh and flawless even on the coldest days.

You can keep your skin looking its best by exfoliating any dry flakes once a week, moisturising 1-2 times daily, switching to a cream cleanser and staying hydrated.

And don’t forget to keep a lip balm on hand! Windburn can be brutal.

Our moisturising must-haves for winter are ModelCo Exfoliating Cream Facial Scrub ($18.95), Sukin Cream Cleanser ($1.95), Skin Doctors Supermoist SPF50 Hydrating Facial Cream ($14.95) and Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm SPF20 05 Quenched ($3.95).

#2 Be clever about foundation

As much as we worry about our foundation slipping and sliding in summer, winter doesn’t come without its challenges!

Some foundations can tend to stick to dry patches and even accentuate dry flakes. This is further exacerbated with setting powder.

Rather than wearing foundation, see if you can get away with a tinted moisturiser or the Cancer Council Face Day Wear Tinted Sunscreen ($7.95).

If foundation is unavoidable, you can always mix a small amount of moisturiser with your foundation to help it apply smoothly.

#3 Wake up a washed-out complexion

The winter weather can tend to wash out our complexions. After you have neutralised any unwanted redness and evened out your base with foundation or tinted moisturiser, bring some flattering colour back to your cheeks with a rose-coloured blush.

L'Oreal True Match Le Blush 145 Rosewood ($5.95) is a lovely shade for the cooler months.

#4 Waterproof your eye makeup

Just like the wind can be harsh on our faces, it can irritate our eyes too. Before you know it, you’re waving goodbye to your beloved mascara and watching it run down your cheeks.

Invest in a waterproof mascara to keep your lashes looking luscious even on the chilliest days.

Go for a volumising mascara like Maybelline Volume Express The Mega Plush Waterproof Mascara ($9.95) to create the illusion of wider, brighter eyes on those days when you really didn’t want to leave the bed. We’ve all been there!

#5 Reconsider your lipstick

As gorgeous as a burgundy matte lip can be on a cold winter’s day, you may want to reconsider matte-finish or long-wearing lipsticks as they tend to be quite drying on the lips.

Creamy lipsticks are going to be your best bet in the winter time as it will keep your lips feeling soft and comfortable.

If you’re after a deep wintery colour, check out Revlon Color Charge Super Lustrous Lipstick 029 Dark Scarlet ($5.95).

With these beauty tips, you’ll be cruising through a winter wonderland!
