How to get thicker hair

Is thinning hair getting you down? We totally get it.

There are so many causes for thinning hair. It can be anything from the overuse of heating products to hormonal imbalances to just plain genetics.

But just as there are many causes for thinning hair, there are also a number of easy remedies for slowing down the cycle and even promoting new hair growth.

It starts in the shower

Most of your haircare comes from the shower. Issues surrounding the shampoo and conditioner you’re using to things as simple as the way in which you wash your hair all play a role in the condition of your hair.

If you’re hair conscious, avoid any shampoos or conditioners with sulfates. While sulfates create a frothy foam for a fantastic lather, sulfates eradicate grease to a point that can leave your hair exceptionally dry causing damaged locks and an irritated scalp.

Another tip that goes hand-in-hand with overdrying your hair is to only wash your hair once every 2-3 days. The more you wash your hair, the more natural oils will be stripped from your scalp.

If your hair can’t last a day without oiling up, invest in a good dry shampoo. Not only do they give your hair a great refresher in-between washes, but they also add volume and body to the hair giving it a fuller and thicker appearance.

Be gentle

If you already suffer from thinning hair, rough drying and styling will only speed up the process.

Instead of furiously towel-drying your hair when you step out of the shower, either wrap your hair in a towel and allow the towel to gradually soak up the water or better yet, let your hair airdry if you can.

Get your blood flowing

Brushing your hair is a simple way to promote hair growth as it exfoliates the scalp and promotes blood flow. Another benefit to brushing your hair is that it helps to distribute the natural oils throughout the hair to moisturise, protect and add shine.

The key is to ensure that you are not tugging or pulling at any knots as this can cause manual damage to the hair. Keep it slow and steady.

As an extra scalp rejuvenator, you can incorporate the Vanity Planet Groove Rejuvenating Scalp Massager into your haircare routine. It provides the same benefits as a regular brush with an additional vibrating motion that encourages increased blood flow. You can even use this brush in conjunction with a thickening shampoo to penetrate the scalp easier.

Hold the heat

If you can, the best way to prevent thinning hair and keep your hair shiny, strong and damage-free is to go on a heat tool hiatus.

I know it sounds like an impossible task but there are plenty of easy heat-free methods to achieving pretty hairstyles.

Plait your hair while it’s still damp and release once dry for effortless beachy waves. Or, twist small sections of your damp hair and bobby pin them in place. Once your hair is dry, release the sections, run your fingers through your hair and spritz with hairspray.

Good luck, ladies!
