How to put on makeup?
Even if you’re a life-time wearer of makeup, brushing up on the latest techniques will help keep you abreast of the latest formulas, products, and colours. For anyone new to wearing makeup, getting the basics down first will set you up for experimenting later so you can build a signature look that is unutterably and fabulously you.
As with all works of art and masterpieces, taking your time and preparing your skin first will help your finished look to really look as good as you imagined. Set aside some time at home and make sure you have everything you need ahead of time. You want to be cool, calm, and collected while you learn. Perspiration is makeup’s enemy. So is stress. Enjoy the process!
Here is a basics list for newbies looking for a standard application that will look natural and help you get introduced to the magical world of makeup possibilities:
- Moisturiser
- Primer
- Liquid Foundation
- Concealer
- Bronzer
- Blush
- Eyeshadow
- Eyeliner
- Mascara
- Lipstick
- Setting sprays and powders
#1 – Love your skin
Makeup can help enhance your natural beauty, but it works best (and is easiest to apply) when your skin is in great condition so love your skin and care for it. You should always start your makeup application with freshly cleansed skin. Moisturising is essential before applying your makeup to ensure that your skin underneath your chosen products looks hydrated and dewy. You have a wide variety of moisturisers to choose from:
● Facial mists
● Serum moisturisers
● Lotions
● Creams
● Oils
For dry skin, opt for heavier moisturises like oils and creams, and for oily skin types opt for serums and lotions. When applying your moisturiser, always be gentle with your skin and move the product upward and outward. Once it’s been applied, allow a few minutes for your skin to absorb it.
#2 – Prime your skin
Primers are designed to soften and smooth out your skin. The product is either gel or lotion based and will gently fill in spaces like wrinkles and little blemishes, allowing your foundation to sit smoothly over the top rather than cake in the gaps. A little bit of primer usually goes a long way so halve what you think you need and then add a little extra if it’s not enough. Don’t forget your eyelids! Our eyelids are naturally oily so not priming your eyelids can ruin your eyeshadow look later in the day.
#3 – Liquid foundations
There are a lot of different types of foundations, but liquid foundations are the easiest and most straightforward to apply. When selecting the right colour, apply it to your jawline and not the back of your hand. If the colour melds perfectly into your jawline then that is the colour for you.
You can choose to apply your foundation with your fingers or with specialist tools. Beauty blenders and foundation makeup brushes are designed to give you an airbrushed finish while your fingers can be tricky if you’re not used to applying product. Beauty blenders should always be moist (not wet!) when you use them to stop them from soaking in your foundation.
Like your moisturiser, always start at the centre and blend upwards and outwards until you have achieved an even coverage. To avoid applying too much, halve what you think you need and then add little by little if you need it. Your foundation is just a base colour designed to create an even canvas from which to build so you should have a slightly washed-out look and even colour coverage once it’s applied.
Don’t forget to bring your foundation down your neck a little bit and under your chin to ensure that it blends naturally.
#4 – Conceal and brighten
The concealer comes in liquid and stick form and it’s not just for hiding blemishes. You should ideally opt for two shades of concealer: a tone that matches your skin tone as close as possible for hiding ugly spots and a light tone for brightening.
When hiding and concealing blemishes, apply the concealer to problem spots directly. Dab on lightly for full coverage, building layer by layer if required. For brightening effects, apply your lighter concealer to areas like under the eye with a moist beauty blender or concealer brush. Dab lightly for even coverage and blending.
If you’re feeling adventurous then you can use your brighter concealer for a bit of contour work as well. Dab a few small spots horizontally over your forehead, down the centre of your nose, and in a curving arc just above your chin. Gently blend the concealer into your foundation base for a natural, luminous look.
#5 – Bronzing
Bronzer is designed to give you a fresh, sun-kissed glow and this part is optional but it’s worth experimenting with. Getting your bronzer right will help to give you a crisp, luminous look every season of the year. You’ll need an actual bronzer brush to really get it right so it’s worth investing in a good one.
A bronzer tone should be about two shades darker than your foundation tone. Using your brush, you’re going to dust a number ‘3’ on both sides of your face hitting your temples, the hollow of your cheek, and your jaw. Starting at the top, apply a light sweep of bronzer down from your temples, into the hollow of your cheek, and then down to your jawline, sweeping gently toward your chin. Repeat on the opposite side and then gently spread some colour down your neck for blending.
#6 – Blush like a pro
Blush and lipstick shade should complement one another, and you can even use them for both applications if you like. Your blush should be applied to the apples of your cheeks and built up in gentle layers. Start with half of what you think you need and then gently apply a little extra if needed. Use a blush brush for powder blushes or gently blend with a finger for cream blushes and lipsticks. Always clean and dry your finger first to remove excess oils. These will thin the pigment of your blush and it will fade faster throughout the day.
#7 – Eyeshadow
Choose a light eyeshadow tone and a dark tone in whatever colour you feel like. Daywear is usually a bit muted with tones like soft pinks, reds, and browns. Start with the lighter tone and cover your entire lid, stopping short of the brow bone, then dab a small amount of the darker tone to the outer corner of your eye and gently sweep inwards along the crease of your eye, under the brow bone. Take a fresh brush and blend the two tones.
#8 – Lining your eyes
There are lots of different eyeliners to choose from but the simplest type to use is a pencil eyeliner. Sharpen it every time you use it to ensure it goes on evenly and start with dotting some tiny lines along the top of your eyelid, as close to your lash line as possible. Use a shadow brush to blend the line evenly.
#8 – Mascara
Mascara is an absolute must-have and it works wonders, opening the eye and brightening your look dramatically. It works best on freshly curled eyelashes so it’s worth investing in an eyelash curler. Gently swirl the mascara wand within the tube rather than pumping. Pumping brings air into the tube and will cause the mascara to dry unevenly, creating lumps. Starting at the base of your top eyelashes, sweep evenly upwards to the tip. You can even hold the wand at the base of your eyelashes and gently close your eye instead. Experiment until you find a technique that feels natural.
Once applied, use a clean wand to comb out your lashes to avoid the dreaded clumps.
#9 – Lips
For natural daywear looks, opt for lipstick as close to your blush shade (if not the same product). Ensure that your lips are exfoliated and hydrated to avoid cracks and peeling and then apply your lip product evenly over both lips. Don’t rub your lips together if you’re using a liquid lipstick as this will cause the product to dry unevenly.
For a fresh day look that isn’t too complicated, opt for a clear gloss and let your natural lip hue shine.
#10 – Set your look
The key to ensuring that your makeup stays in place all day long is using a setting spray or powder. Follow the instructions of the particular product you have chosen.
You’re done!
These are just some standard basics that will help you build a signature technique of your own. You’ll find everything you need available to order online at Cosmetic Capital so start now!
