How to find the correct foundation for your skin shade

Author: Jasmine Cottan   Date Posted: 1 November 2018

Finding your foundation shade can be hard work, so we've put together this handy guide on what to look for so you always look your best!

Let’s face it. Whether you’re after a liquid, cream or a pressed powder, finding the right foundation that's an exact match to our skin colour can be really tough.

Not to worry though, because we’re here along with our trusty sidekick, LA Girl to get you colour matching like a pro! No more unsightly unblended lines and mismatched foundation.

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1 - Check your skin colour

Finding the correct foundation for your skin colour is all about assessing the tone of your complexion.

Assess whether you have either cool-toned or warm-toned skin. A suitable method is to wear a white T-shirt and stand in the natural sunlight and see if your skin brings out more yellow, pink or red hues. If you have blue or pink undertones, you may possess cool-toned skin. If you have reddish undertones, you own a warm skin tone.

Checking the colour of your veins is another excellent indication to see if you have either warm or cool-toned skin. People with blue veins tend to have cool-toned skin. Those with green have warmer skin tones.

Step 2 – Establish your skin category

In the world of makeup and foundation, skin shades come under four different types- Fair, Medium, Tanned/Olive and Dark. Understanding these categories can further determine your correct foundation colour.

Luckily, LA Girl Foundations have names like Ivory, Natural, Porcelain or Cafe - these foundation names usually give you some indication on the skin category they're under.

Step 3 - Establish the finer details of your skin tone

Unfortunately, most people forget to take this into account and often choose a foundation that irritates their skin.

Ask yourself the following questions - Do you have oily skin? Are you more prone to breakouts, or do you have a dry, over-sensitive skin?

Here are some things to think about:

If you have oily or combination skin, you may wish to turn to a foundation that provides a matte finish and oil-free. You may want to go for a powder foundation as an alternative.

If you have dry skin, find a foundation that is infused with antioxidants to help hydrate the skin

Those with sensitive skin, we advise choosing a foundation free of harmful synthetics, is hypoallergenic and scent free to avoid aggravating your skin issues.

If you have a smooth skin-tone, find a foundation that offers partial/sheer coverage for a natural, soft-focus finish.

Remember, the best kind of foundation should be buildable, long-lasting, blends naturally into the skin in a seamless finish, while effectively covering pores and fine lines. Foundation isn't meant to be seen.

Also, don’t feel obligated to stick to one foundation colour. It's not unusual for your skin-tone to lighten during the winter as your skin isn't receiving natural sunlight. Mix and match two colours to find the foundation that's just right for you.
