What should I look for in dress-up makeup?

Products sold specifically as cosmetic face and body makeup that meet safety requirements, rather than craft or art materials, which are not formulated for skin. Check the pack for age guidance and for whether the product is cleared for use near the eyes and mouth, which many are not.

Should I patch test?

Yes, particularly for children and anyone with sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and wait 24 hours. Costume products are often used in heavier application than everyday makeup, which increases the chance of a reaction.

How do I make it last through an event?

Set with a light dusting of translucent powder, and a setting spray if the look needs to survive several hours. For body makeup, allow it to dry fully before dressing. Cream products transfer readily onto fabric until they are set.

How do I remove it?

Heavily pigmented costume makeup does not come off with a face wash. Use an oil-based cleanser or micellar water first to break it down, then cleanse normally. Avoid scrubbing — pigment spreads rather than lifts, and vigorous rubbing is what causes irritation afterwards.
