To get the most out of your mascara application, start by curling your lashes. You can also apply a lash primer as a base for better results and increased wear-time, but this is optional.

Twist the mascara wand out of the tube and wipe off any excess product on the side of the tube to avoid any clumping. Start with your upper lashes and wiggle the mascara wand in a zig-zag motion from root to tip. Apply mascara to your lower lashes using the tip of the wand. Focus on the roots to avoid an unnatural ‘spidery’ look.

Apply a second coat of mascara if needed. You can add a third, but any additional coats after that may make your lashes flake or clump together.

To rectify clumping, allow your lashes to dry then comb through them with a clean mascara wand or a lash comb.

Smudging can be avoided by priming your eyes and under eyes, then setting then with a translucent powder to mattify the area and keep any oils at bay.

Correct mascara application can also aid in the prevention of smudging. If you struggle with lower lash mascara application, you can rest a spoon, tissue or makeup sponge underneath your lower lashes to prevent getting product on the skin.

If you do happen to get any mascara on your skin in the application process, allow it to dry then gently take it off with a slightly damp cotton bud.

While you can put mascara on lash extensions, you need to be cautious and consider the type of lash extensions you have as well as the ingredients in your mascara.

Mascara adds weight to your eyelashes. This additional weight might still feel comfortable with classic lash extensions, but it may be too heavy on volume or hybrid sets. This added weight can cause your lash extensions to fall out earlier than anticipated.

If you still want to add mascara to your lash extensions for a fuller look, avoid any mascaras formulated with silicone or oils. Oil-based mascaras can break down the lash adhesive and cause your extensions to shed prematurely. Water-based mascaras are the best option.

Refrain from using waterproof mascaras on your lash extensions as they tend to have stronger formulations which could dry them out and damage them.

Waterproof mascara takes a little more effort to remove, but it can be done with a bit of patience and care.

Make your selection from micellar water, baby oil, coconut oil or another specifically formulated makeup removal solution and apply it to a cotton makeup removal pad. Rest the cotton makeup removal pad on top of your lashes with your eyes closed and soak your lashes in the solution for 20-30 seconds. Gently slide the cotton makeup removal pad down your lashes and then wipe away any residual makeup from your skin.

Avoid rubbing or scrubbing your eyes in an attempt to remove waterproof mascara. The skin around the eyes is very sensitive and is easily susceptible to redness and wrinkles.
