Moisturisers

While washing your face each day and night is the most vital part of your skin-care routine, moisturising follows soon after. When you wash your face, you strip your skin of its natural oils and leave it vulnerable to dry patches and flakiness. Moisturisers replenish the oil that has been lost to keep the skin nourished and healthy, leaving it feeling beautifully silky smooth.

Even oily skin types benefit from using moisturisers. If you wash your face repeatedly in an effort to combat oiliness, you’ll find your skin getting even oilier. This is because the skin is working overtime to replenish the oil that has been lost. Using a moisturiser after washing will help rebalance your skins natural oil production, leaving you with just the right amount of oil to keep your skin healthy and happy.

There are plenty of moisturisers on the market that target different skin types and concerns. Find the best moisturiser for you below!

Which moisturiser suits my skin type?

Texture matters more than marketing. Gel and gel-cream formulas are lightweight and absorb quickly, which suits oily and combination skin. Lotions work for normal to combination skin. Richer creams and balms suit dry skin and cooler weather. If your skin feels tight an hour after applying, you need something heavier; if it feels greasy, go lighter.

Do oily skin types need moisturiser?

Yes. Skipping moisturiser does not reduce oil production, and skin stripped by cleansing can produce more oil in response. A light gel formula gives hydration without a heavy feel. Look for non-comedogenic on the label if congestion is a concern.

Day cream or night cream — is there a difference?

Day formulas are usually lighter and often include SPF, since sun protection is the single most useful daytime step. Night formulas tend to be richer and may include actives better used in the evening. You do not strictly need both, but if you use one product for both, choose a day formula with SPF and accept it will feel lighter at night.

When should I apply it?

Within a minute or so of cleansing, while skin is still slightly damp — moisturiser applied to damp skin holds hydration more effectively than on fully dry skin. Apply after any serums, which are thinner and should go on first.
