What does vitamin C do in skincare?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant used in skincare to help brighten the appearance of skin and even out the look of tone over time. It is most commonly formulated as a serum applied in the morning, where its antioxidant properties complement sunscreen rather than replacing it.

Which form should I choose?

L-ascorbic acid is the most studied form but is also the least stable and can be irritating at higher concentrations. Derivatives such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and ethylated ascorbic acid are gentler and more stable, though generally slower to show results. If you have sensitive skin, start with a derivative or a lower percentage.

Morning or night?

Morning is the usual recommendation, layered under sunscreen. It is not harmful at night, but the antioxidant benefit is most relevant during daylight exposure.

Why has my serum turned orange?

Oxidation. Vitamin C degrades with exposure to light, air and heat, and a serum that has darkened from clear or pale yellow to orange or brown has lost potency. Buy smaller bottles, keep them closed and away from the bathroom window, and replace them rather than pushing through.
