How often should I clean my brushes?

Foundation, concealer and other brushes used with liquid or cream products are best cleaned weekly, since they hold the most product and stay damp. Powder brushes can go two to four weeks. Eye brushes used daily benefit from a quick spot clean between colours and a deep clean fortnightly.

What is the difference between a spray and a shampoo?

Sprays are spot cleaners — they dissolve product and dry within minutes, so the brush is usable immediately. They do not remove built-up product deep in the bristles. Solid or liquid brush shampoos are deep cleaners, used with water, and require drying time. Most people need both.

How do I dry brushes without ruining them?

Never dry a brush upright. Water runs into the ferrule, dissolves the glue and loosens the bristles permanently. Reshape the head, then lay flat with the bristles hanging over the edge of a bench, or dry head-down. Allow a full day for dense foundation brushes.

Can I use regular soap or shampoo?

It will clean them, but bar soap can leave residue and harsh shampoos strip natural bristles. Dedicated brush cleaners are formulated to rinse cleanly and condition the fibres. Either way, use lukewarm rather than hot water.
