What ingredients should I look for in a lip balm?

Occlusives and emollients do the work. Petrolatum, beeswax, lanolin and plant butters such as shea and cocoa form a barrier that slows moisture loss. Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw in moisture. The most effective formulas combine both — a humectant alone can leave lips feeling drier in very dry air.

Why do my lips feel worse after using balm?

Two common causes. Menthol, camphor and strong flavouring can feel cooling but leave some people reaching for the tin more often. Frequent reapplication of a very light balm also gives short-lived relief without much barrier. If this sounds familiar, switch to a plainer, thicker formula and apply less often.

Should I use SPF lip balm?

Lips have very little natural pigment protection, and in Australian conditions a balm with SPF is a sensible everyday choice — particularly for outdoor work, sport and time on the water. Reapply as you would any sunscreen rather than once in the morning.

Do I need to exfoliate my lips?

Occasionally, and gently. A soft toothbrush or a fine sugar scrub once or twice a week is enough to lift flakes before applying colour. Over-exfoliating makes lips more prone to dryness, so keep it light and always follow with balm.
