What makes a foundation waterproof?
Waterproof and water-resistant formulas use film-forming polymers that set into a flexible layer water beads off rather than dissolves. Most are silicone-based, which is why they resist humidity and perspiration as well as rain. No foundation is completely impervious — water resistance is a matter of degree, and heavy rubbing will still shift product.
When is it worth using?
Long days outdoors, Australian summer humidity, weddings and events, sport, and anywhere you cannot retouch. It is also useful for anyone whose base normally separates around the nose and chin by mid-afternoon, since the same properties that resist water resist sebum.
How do I remove it?
Water and a standard foaming cleanser will not break down a silicone film. Use a micellar water or an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve it, then follow with your usual cleanser. Skipping this step is the most common cause of congestion after wearing long-wear makeup.
Why does it look patchy on me?
Waterproof formulas set fast and grip where they land. Work in small sections with a damp sponge, blend before it sets, and avoid going back over an area once it has. Applying over a silicone primer helps; applying over facial oil or a heavy cream will break the film down before it forms.
